Marlins Inform Sandy Alcantara He Will Not Be Traded in Offseason

The Miami Marlins (45-75) have been in full sell-off mode this season. Under a new President of Baseball Operations, and with a team that vastly overachieved in 2023, they began building toward the future by selling their present.

One piece of their present has not been... present... this season, but that has been of no fault of his own. Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, so he has not played in 2024.

While the Marlins would seemingly receive a king's ransom in return for Alcantara, the club informed the pitcher on Tuesday that they would not be trading him this offseason, per Craig Mish of the Miami Herald.

Alcantara's rehab has gone to plan so far, and the team expects the ace to be their Opening Day starter in 2025.

The Marlins acquired Alcantara, 28, from the St. Louis Cardinals (60-60) in a trade that sent Marcell Ozuna to St. Louis. The Marlins also received Magneuris Sierra , Daniel Castano , and Zac Gallen in that trade.

Alcantara made his Major League debut with the Cardinals, but only pitched in relief and only made it into eight games in 2017. It was that offseason that he would be traded to the Marlins.

In six seasons with the Marlins, Alcantara has pitched to a 3.31 ERA across 892 1/3 innings in 138 starts with 779 strikeouts and a 130 ERA+. He has been named a National League All-Star twice and won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022.

The Marlins are hopeful that Alcantara's rehab will continue to go as planned so that he can be ready for the Opening Day of the 2025 season.
