'Ahead Of Schedule!' Steelers QB Russell Wilson On Playing Preseason Games

Any time a player suffers an injury, there is a little bit of fear in the back of their minds wondering if they are truly healed. The fear usually subsides once they step onto the field and prove to themselves they can do all the things they need to do in the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson missed a considerable amount of training camp with a calf injury sustained during conditioning tests. In speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Wilson declared he’s ready to go.

Yeah, I've been working every single day,” Wilson said. “Even the days I was a little bit lighter in team, I was getting all the fundamental work, and then obviously over the last two weeks, I've really been building up a lot more reps in the team drills and everything else.

"So that's been great. I feel really good. I'm ahead of schedule."

Some would declare that Wilson doesn’t need to get on the field until the regular season, but reports are that backup Justin Fields is closer to winning the job than some would like to admit.

The 13-year veteran is saying all the right things, but he knows he has to get on the field and show the coaching staff that he can still play. He has to out perform Fields in order to keep his job.

As the rest of the preseason unfolds, this quarterback battle is only going to intensify. The battle continues this Saturday when the Steelers host the Buffalo Bills.
