Bright present and future: Twins farm system rated among best in MLB

The Minnesota Twins have the best record in the majors this season since April 20 but their future is also looking bright.

Following midseason updates from several major outlets, the Twins are rated as having one of the best farm systems in the entire league.

MLB Pipeline puts them as one of six clubs with the most top-100 prospects, with six, but in terms of over overall prospect depth, the Twins ranked fourth per MLB Pipeline.

Baseball America only has them with five top-100 prospects but still rates the Twins as having the third-best farm system in baseball, and ESPN ranked them fourth, up from ninth ahead of the 2024 season.

Part of that improvement is due to strong seasons by several prospects and another is the talent added in last month’s draft. MLB Pipeline rates five of Minnesota’s 2024 draft picks among the club’s top-30 prospects, with four of them in the top-15.

Minnesota and Tampa Bay were the only two MLB teams to have their farm systems ranked in the top-five by all three of those outlets.

Another reason it should be exciting for Twins fans? Several of those prospects are starting to impact the big-league team.

Brooks Lee, one of their consensus top-100 prospects, was called up on July 3 and has appeared in 26 games already. He’s expected to play a key role down the stretch, although he’s currently on the injured list.

Pitchers David Festa and Zebby Matthews have also both debuted this summer — Matthews just this week — and will be relied on heavily down the stretch due to Minnesota’s other injuries.

Top prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez is also on the 40-man roster already and could be the next to debut, although he’s still at Double-A, so that may be unlikely unless several outfielders get hurt. However, he’s one of 10 top-30 Twins prospects, as rated by MLB Pipeline, who are currently at Double-A or Triple-A, so several other prospects are getting very close to the big-leagues.

Hopefully the Twins can get healthy and put together a memorable rest of the season but they seem to be set up for success for the foreseeable future.
