Ex Commanders’ Tight End Analyzes Jahan Dotson

The knock on Washington Commanders receiver Jahan Dotson is that he is too easily knocked off his routes. Former NFL veteran tight end Logan Paulsen, who also played for the Commanders, offered his analysis of Dotson’s game against the Jets while making an appearance on the Craig Hoffman Show.

“I love him as a route runner, I love his feel for catching the football. But his play strength shows up more than I would like it to,” Paulsen said. “When you are watching Terry, Olamide Zaccheaus, even Jamison Crowder, there is a strength to them that allows them to play through contact.

“The fade in the second quarter going into the red zone where Dotson beats the guy, but gets a little bit of a bump and then loses his footing and falls down stands out.”

Definitely not what you want to see from one of your playmakers. Beating man coverage, especially press-man, is something that Dotson is going to have to learn to do. Whether its though strength or technique, it’s something he will have to do to be successful in the NFL.

“If I am a coach, I want to see him play through that,” Paulsen continued. “The only way I get to see it is as he’s getting reps. I think that’s something coming out of the game. I think Jahan did some good stuff. I think he had a screen where he was a little creative, but I need to see him play stronger.”

Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will find creative ways to get Dotson into space where he won’t be as easily moved off his routes. As the preseason continues, we should see adjustments as the offense evolves.

The Commanders travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins on Saturday night.
