Former MLB Player Becomes 29-Year-Old Walk-On Freshman For SEC Team

One of the more astonishing developments you will see this season in college football is when you turn on an Arkansas Razorbacks game. Arkansas rostered Monte Harrison , who is a former MLB player who is entering college as a 29-year-old walk-on freshman. Yes, a walk-on freshman.

In 2014, Harrison was a four-star recruit and was expected to commit to the University of Nebraska, where he would play both baseball and football. But he was selected in the MLB draft out of high school in the second round by the Milwaukee Brewers and chose that route instead.

It didn't take long for the media to take the story and run with it. Harrison even had NBA legend LeBron James posting about it.

"Me when I retire from the league! Haha!" James said via Instagram

However, despite spending 10 seasons at the professional level, Harrison only appeared in 50 MLB games, and he didn't reach the major leagues until 2020, when he got his first opportunity with the Miami Marlins. He later got a shot with the Los Angeles Angels. The 50 games he appeared in stretched from 2020-2022.

Which leads to where he is at now. Harrison never used up any of his college eligibility. He technically still had four years left since he never attended any type of schooling after high school. An incredible journey, to say the least.

Harrison is set to make his college football debut as a wide receiver on Thursday, August 29th against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
