Steelers Reveal Extension Plans for Russell Wilson & Justin Fields

The Pittsburgh Steelers overhauled their quarterback room this offseason, bringing in veterans Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen to compete for the starting job in 2024. Despite this influx of resources, the position's future remains uncertain beyond this season.

None of the three quarterbacks are currently under contract for the 2025 season, leaving the Steelers with potential decisions to make in the near future. When asked about the possibility of extending either Wilson or Fields beyond 2024, Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl made it clear that the organization is taking a patient, more measured approach at QB.

“I think you just let it play itself out,” Weidl said regarding the current QB situation. “You can’t worry too much down the road. You keep an eye on it, but you just take it one day at a time, watch these guys go out there and perform and evaluate and make decisions based on [the understanding that] at the end of the day, at the end of the season, you’ll know.”

Most would interpret this as meaning Pittsburgh has no immediate plans to lock up Wilson or Fields with long-term deals before the season kicks off, a process that makes sense given the circumstances of everyone involved.

Wilson, a former standout out for the Wisconsin Badgers , now 35, is coming off two subpar seasons with the Broncos and has battled a calf injury this summer, limiting his time on the field. His decline in play over the past three years leaves the Steelers front office understandably cautious about committing to him beyond 2024.

Fields, however, still presents a potential long-term option for the franchise. At just 25 years old, he has, on several occasions, flashed the potential that once made him a highly touted prospect at Ohio State. But consistency — and ball security — remains a substantial hurdle. After a mixed training camp, the jury is still out on whether Fields can take the necessary steps to solidify himself as the future of the Steelers’ offense.

With uncertainty lingering at the quarterback position, Pittsburgh is opting for a sensible approach: let the season unfold and evaluate from there. It’s a decision that carries little risk, given where these signal-callers are at in their respective careers, but it also leaves the Steelers with the flexibility to re-assess their options before making any long-term commitments.
