    Could Commanders Trade Marcus Mariota?

    By Wil Riggs,

The Washington Commanders recently signed quarterback Trace McSorley to the roster. The former sixth-round pick out of Penn State last played in 2022 for Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury with the Arizona Cardinals.

McSorley was less than impressive completing just 45-83 passes for 412 yards and five interceptions while throwing no touchdown passes. Expectations aren’t high for McSorley, or the Commanders for that matter, so what if his signing was a prelude to something else?

    A trade perhaps?

Washington is short on draft picks, holding just six for next year’s draft. The Minnesota Vikings are short on quarterbacks following rookie J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending knee surgery. The surgery was a success and McCarthy will be back on the field next year.

So, the Vikings need a stop-gap. Enter, quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Mariota, 31, signed a one-year, $6 million deal earlier this offseason to join the Commanders. He was hoping to be the starter but has clearly been outperformed by this year’s No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels.

Mariota, a former No. 2 overall pick himself, last started as a member of the Atlanta Falcons back in 2022 posting a 5-8 record with the dirty birds. He spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

If general manager Adam Peters could get a late-round pick in return for Mariota and continue to load his draft cannon for next year, it would be worth the conversation for sure.
