'Want A Guy To Step Up!' Chiefs Need Young CB To Fill Role

The Kansas City Chiefs are focused on winning an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl championship.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the offense get a ton of attention. However, maybe the one hitch in this dynasty wagon right now is who is going to step up and fill the role of the departed L’Jarius Sneed?

All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie exploded onto the scene and is the clear No. 1 corner. But who is going to step up across from him? Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was asked about it recently.

"Same thing," Merritt said. "You want a guy to step up. ... Jaylen Watson, and Joshua Williams have played a lot of football for us. Nazeeh Johnson, of course, is coming back off of a knee injury, but you want someone to step up and be able to claim that position and not have a guy rotating and always looking over his shoulder.

“We're looking for the same thing.''

Right now, Joshua Williams is listed as the No. 2 corner and Chamarri Conner is listed as the nickel back. Right behind them are Nazeeh Johnson, Jaylen Watson and Keith Taylor Jr.

One of these guys has to step up and they only have two more preseason games to show Merritt and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo what they can do.

The Chiefs host the Detroit Lions on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. CST. ... at which time we may unearth more answers in this secondary.
