Josh Pate Makes Major 5-Year Prediction for Dan Lanning and Kalen DeBoer

College football is currently undergoing a significant transition phase, and it's not just because of NIL and the transfer portal. The landscape is also changing with the departure of prominent head coaches.

Gone now are Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh, though for different reasons. Saban retired, and Harbaugh bolted for the NFL to take the Los Angeles Chargers job. Also gone are several other past National Championship-winning coaches like Urban Meyer, Jimbo Fisher, and Ed Orgeron.

A new crop of already successful head coaches is stepping in, including Oregon Ducks' Dan Lanning and Alabama Crimson Tide's Kalen DeBoer.

Josh Pate of Late Kick is high on both of these individuals, even predicting that each will be hoisting a national title within the next five years.

Pate notes that the debate seems to center on which coach will succeed. He insists that both are on their way to becoming major successes and that there shouldn't be any debate.

“Could I interest you in a prop bet of Dan Lanning and Kalen DeBoer? I believe they’ll both win a (national) title in the next 5 years,” Pate said.

These are bold predictions, but they may not be too far-fetched.

Lanning, who enters his third year in Eugene this year, is already 22-5 overall with two bowl wins and an appearance in the final Pac-12 Championship Game last season. He's continued to recruit top 10 classes and has made significant transfer portal acquisitions that have helped bolster his team’s rosters over the past couple of seasons.

DeBoer, meanwhile, has become one of the winningest coaches across all of college football. In total, he has a 104-12 record, including a 25-3 record with his former team, the Washington Huskies, whom he led to the National Championship last year. He also won three NAIA national titles at Sioux Falls.

Each coach will face new and greater challenges this season. Lanning will lead the Ducks into the new-look, 18-team Big Ten Conference, where they will face the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, and others.

DeBoer, on the other hand, not only joins a new conference in the SEC but also takes over a program that has been led by possibly the greatest head coach in college football history, Nick Saban.

It may take some time before we see the best of these coaches, but with the addition of the new 12-team College Football Playoff, both have a great shot at making the playoff and competing for a national championship.
