Giants Safety Pinnock Expected To Break Out

The New York Giants threw heavy resources at their defense this offseason in the form of trading for edge rusher Brian Burns. His arrival changes the outlook of the defense significantly and should play a role in helping Kayvon Thibodeaux’s development.

But Thibodeaux alone can’t take the only step forward on this side of the ball.

The secondary – young, inexperienced, and more athletic than years past – must develop , too.

There’s no promise that comes quickly. Secondaries can take time to gel, especially young ones, and New York has little in the form of continuity.

However, the uncertainty that comes with the unit lends itself to upside.

The cornerback room plays host to former first-round pick Deonte Banks, 2024 third-round pick Dru Phillips, and third-year corner Cor’Dale Flott, should he beat out Nick McCloud. Over the top, rookie safety Tyler Nubin will eventually take over the starting gig next to Jason Pinnock. Each of those have a decent shot at growing into more consistent defensive backs and make New York less prone to explosive plays.

CBS Sports recently highlighted Pinnock as a candidate to break out and headline this secondary.

“Pinnock is now the old veteran in a secondary that has seen fellow safeties like Julian Love and Xavier McKinney exit over the past couple of offseasons,” Jared Dubin wrote. “With the benefit of their experience, along with his athleticism and instincts, he should be able to take a step forward in his second year as a starter.”

Pinnock was a playmaker for the Giants last season, grabbing two interceptions (one for a league-leading 102-yard score) and forcing two fumbles in 16 games. He was arguably the most consistent member of the secondary and was rewarded with an uncontested starting job amidst turnover on the back end.

Neither Pinnock nor Nubin have game-breaking upside like some of their teammates, but offering a high floor could help contain others’ mistakes, and another step forward for Pinnock would entrench him among the league’s more formidable safeties.

Not bad for a summertime waiver claim.
