Luis Severino pitched a complete game shutout last night. It was the first one for a Met pitcher since Jacob DeGrom in 2021.

Severino was dominant throughout the game. He pounded the zone from the first inning on. Sometimes that’s all it takes. The veteran was very aware of the team and lineup he was going against.

The Marlins lineup is filled with lots of inexperience and lots of weak stats. Severino knew the worst thing he could do was give the team extra chances. The right hander only walked one. He threw 78 strikes and only 35 balls.

Severino was always attacking hitters. He was always ahead of hitters and the Marlins were always defending at the plate. Severino induced a lot of soft contact and got 10 ground ball outs.

Severino was aided by quality fielding throughout the day. In the second inning, Harrison Bader covered a lot of ground and made a great diving catch.

In the third inning, New York turned a very improbable double play. With a runner on second, a ground ball was hit right to Lindor. The runner broke towards third and Lindor caught him. Lindor threw to third and the Mets had the runner trapped in a rundown. They took a while getting the out, allowing the hitter to attempt to scramble to second.

Jeff McNeil slapped the tag on the runner from second and Mark Vientos made the heads up play of covering second. McNeil threw it to Vientos. Vientos slapped the tag down and the Mets had turned two. Severino erupted and showed his gratitude for the excellent play.

Severino knew he had a chance of doing something special. It was evident in the eighth inning that he really wanted the CG. Severino struck out two in the eighth inning. After he finished the inning, he made it very clear that he wanted the ninth inning.

Severino had already thrown 97 pitches. Severino’s usage has been much discussed. There has been concern about his level of fatigue recently as he continues to throw more innings and pitches than he has in 5 seasons.

However, Carlos Mendoza gave Severino the ninth. The fans gave Severino a standing ovation as he came out for the ninth.

Severino then hit the first batter he faced in the ninth on the first pitch he threw. Mendoza walked to the mound to a sea of boos. Fans thought he was taking the pitcher out. However, it became clear when Mendoza got to the mound that he was not there to take Severino out.

Severino rewarded his manager’s trust. Severino was very amped up. He had a look in his eye that said he would finish the game no matter what. Severino struck out the next batter, throwing his fastest pitch of the game in that at bat.

He got the next hitter to pop out before ending the game with another strikeout. He let out a roar and pumped his fist. Severino mixed the sheer will of wanting the shutout with excellent pitching to complete his shutout.
