Xavier 'Worthy' Of Wait As Chiefs WR Shines

    By Adam Schultz,

All week prior to the Kansas City Chiefs' second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, there was a push to get rookie receiver Xavier Worthy snaps and, more importantly, meaningful snaps.

While quarterback Patrick Mahomes echoed that sentiment, he also stressed the importance of keeping an offensive balance and not going outside of Andy Reid's framework just to get Worthy touches.

But in the first half against the Lions, Worthy got his touches as he hauled in three catches for 62 yards, which included a 22-yard touchdown from Carson Wentz on third down to announce himself to the NFL world.

Worthy also showed off his deep-threat speed on the Chiefs' first drive of the game thanks to a 39-yard bomb from Mahomes that saw the rookie help flip field position.

Not only did Worthy show his talents as a pass-catcher, but he also had an 11-yard run out of the backfield, too.

So we have now seen in "real" NFL action exactly what Worthy can do for the Chiefs offense, and it is rather scary for the rest of the NFL.

Worthy blew past his defender with ease on his touchdown grab, creating over five yards of separation, leaving a simple pitch and catch pass from Wentz to score in the endzone.

While it is only a half, Worthy showed all the things that will make the rest of the NFL nervous when facing the Chiefs in 2024. ... and it was "worthy'' ... worth ... the wait.

Yes, it is only preseason and not much stock can be taken by what happens on the field, but Worthy's downfield speed and just how ease he was able to get open on his touchdown grab will make the rest of the league shift a little nervously in their seats.

All week, the Chiefs stated they wanted to give Worthy the ball. Against the Lions, they did, and the results were as expected—explosive.
