On Sunday afternoon, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever went up against the Seattle Storm for the fourth and final time of the 2024 WNBA season.

During the game, the Fever and WNBA posted to social media that with her second assist, Clark (225) has passed former Sacramento Monarchs star Ticha Penichiero (224) for the most assists by a rookie in league history.

But there were conflicting posts from the WNBA and ESPN about Clark's new record.

The WNBA had Penichiero with 224 total assists back in her 1998 rookie season. However, ESPN, who is broadcasting the Fever vs. Storm match, had the record at 225 assists.

With that being said, the WNBA had Clark breaking the record on her second assist of the game, while ESPN had her breaking it with her third assist.

Either way, Clark has officially broken the rookie assists record. But her second assist came in the second quarter, and her third came after halftime.

This left about 30 minutes of time that many fans were very confused about the accuracy of her new record. They took to social media to leave their thoughts.

"While no doubt Caitlin Clark was going to break the record today regardless, I thought the record was at 225 assists for the season."

"As of halftime, Caitlin Clark has not yet broken the rookie assist record. What the WNBA X account fubar shows the number of "Caitlin Clark fans" on Twitter that aren't really fans. Truly embarrassing."

"LMFAO there’s a discrepancy with the assist record? Caitlin Clark drop another 8 dimes to put this to rest"

"If you're wondering why some stats site say 224 and some say 225, well, the WNBA has not done a good job of making it clear."

"If the record was at 224 or 225 Caitlin Clark has now broke the assist record regardless"

It took 30 games for Penicheiro to secure the rookie assist record, but for Clark, it only took 28. By the end of the season, Clark will not only have the new milestone but will have shattered it.

She is also on track to break the all-time WNBA assists record. Prior to the game against Seattle, she was only 94 assists away from breaking Connecticut Suns star Alyssa Thomas' record of 316.
