Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark passed WNBA legend Ticha Penicheiro for the league's all-time rookie assist record on Sunday.

Heading into the Fever's match against the Seattle Storm, Penicheiro held the WNBA record for the most assists by a rookie with 224 in the 1998 season.

Clark surpassed the league legend when she found Lexie Hull on the fastbreak in the second quarter of the game. The rookie led the pack, attracted the help side defender and found a trailing Hull, who scored the layup.

Following the game, Clark spoke on passing Penicheiro for the all-time record.

She shared high praise for the former WNBA champion, mentioning that they've always had mutual respect for one another, and while Clark may have attained the record, she gave credit to Penicheiro for her style of play.

"Ticha is somebody that's been very supportive of myself, even since I was in college, and if you watch her highlights, she was definitely a better passer than me," Clark said. "She had way more flare to her game in the way she passed the ball. She would spin around and make these crazy passes. I kind of just run in transition, chuck it up there and hope for the best."

Penicheiro finished her WNBA career as a two-time First Team All-WNBA player, four-time WNBA All-Star and seven-time WNBA assist leader.

She's widely known as one of the best guards to have ever stepped on the WNBA hardwood, and Clark didn't just surpass the league legend in her rookie season; she holds the record with 12 games left to play in her rookie year.
