Steve Kerr Nearing End with Team USA?
By Lance Roberson,

Steve Kerr won gold for Team USA in 2024. What’s next for the successful head coach? It’s possible the Golden State Warriors head coach coached his last Olympic match. According to Marc Stein, “Kerr is not expected to continue as USA Basketball men's head coach.”
For a championship coach, in the professional and Olympic level, Kerr receives significant grief for rotations. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is coming off an NBA championship season, but such accomplishments meant next to nothing to Kerr, as Tatum experienced two DNPs.
Furthermore, Kerr’s decision to force Joel Embiid in the starting lineup despite lackluster results rubbed critics the wrong way.
However, despite the “flaws” and the Monday morning quarterback commentary Kerr maintained a gold medal finish, with significant assistance from Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant.
According to Stein, two coaches come to mind as Kerr’s replacement. “USAB is expected to choose either Miami's Erik Spoelstra or the LA Clippers' Tyronn Lue, both assistants to Kerr, as his replacement,” Stein reported.
Kerr is 58, and although such an age is nowhere near old to coach an Olympic team, the Warriors’ head coach has a history of back problems,
The two aforementioned coaches both bode well as his replacement, as they command respect among the NBA universe. Spoelstra helped coach the Select Team, which scrimmaged against Team USA as a warmup for the Tokyo Olympics.
Lue became Kerr’s Team USA assistant in Feb. of 2023. Although Lue has Olympic experience, Spoelstra’s tenure beats the Los Angeles Clippers head coach.
Through the moments of scrutiny and the close call vs. Serbia Kerr smiled through the adversity. Fittingly, Kerr joked about retirement following Team USA’s gold medal victory, but sometimes truth is hidden behind laughs.
