Cam Newton has not been shy about sharing his NFL experiences (or lack thereof) in recent years. Now, you can add the Washington Commanders to the list.

In a recent episode of the "4th & 1 with Cam Newton" show , the 2015 NFL MVP revealed he was "hurt" by his former coach Ron Rivera and the Commanders for not reaching out to sign him.

"I don't know, it hurt me though," Newton said, admitting that he expected an offer from Washington. "I said, at the bare minimum, Washington would come f*** with me. It wasn't just Ron Rivera, it was damn (former executive) Marty Hurney, it was (former head athletic trainer) Ryan Vermillion, everybody. It was Panthers reincarnated in Washington."

"To not get no call? F***" a deflated Newton shared, later adding, "It f***** with me though. I ain't gonna lie."

Newton, the former No. 1 overall draft pick, and Rivera spent nine seasons together with the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2019. The duo transformed the 2-14 Panthers and reached the mountaintop in 2015 after a 15-1 season, but lost the 2016 Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos.

The 62-year-old Rivera was most recently fired by Washington in January 2024 following a 26-40-1 record over four seasons as the team's head coach. Washington struggled with consistent quarterback play under Rivera as eight different signal-callers started at least one game during that span.

"You've been through the struggle with him, and then to not get a call, yeah it was one of them s**** like, 'OK, I see what's happening here,'" Newton said.

The 35-year-old last started five games (0-5) for the 5-12 Panthers during the 2021 season.
