Pete Thamel Predicts More Conference Realignment Coming For College Football

This offseason, there was vast change throughout the college football world. The Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, Colorado Buffaloes, Utah Utes, Arizona State Sun Devils, Arizona Wildcats, SMU Mustangs, California Golden Bears and Stanford Cardinal all moved to different conferences.

In a recent " College GameDay Podcast " episode, Pete Thamel made another prediction about conference realignment. He predicted that the ACC's current alignment would not last long. The conference now has 17 teams, and SMU, Cal and Stanford have been added.

The last time an ACC team won a national title was the Clemson Tigers' 2018 victory against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Clemson won another national title in 2016 against the same team. The Miami Hurricanes last won a national title in 2001. The Florida State Seminoles beat the Auburn Tigers to win a national championship in 2013.

"...I looked around at all the different logos and all the different places in this moment of time, especially the ACC, and you see Stanford," Thamel said. "My reaction was, 'Okay, that's weird.' But it was so like, 'This is not forever.' Like, this is a very, very uneasy truce of these 17 schools."

Even conferences like the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 are full of teams. The SEC has 16 teams, the Big 12 has 16, and the Big Ten has 18 teams.

It will be interesting to see how college football changes in the coming years, with so many new features, like NIL and the transfer portal, added in recent years.
