Dylan Raiola officially named Huskers starting QB

It’s official: True freshman Dylan Raiola is the starting quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The program announced head coach Matt Rhule’s decision on Wednesday.

He’d been competing with fellow true freshman Daniel Kaelin and junior Heinrich Haarberg for the starting job this spring and summer but was the presumed frontrunner all along.

Raiola was rated as a top-10 recruit in the country by most outlets last year when the Huskers got him to flip his commitment from Georgia ahead of National Signing Day, making him the program’s highest-rated commit since Marlon Lucky in 2005, per 247Sports.

The youngster has drawn comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for his look off the field but has also worked with some of the coaches and trainers that help Mahomes and other NFL stars.

With improved weapons elsewhere on offense to help Raiola, the Huskers seem almost guaranteed to significantly improve upon last year's 129th-ranked passing game.

The team opens the season on Aug. 31 against UTEP.
