On Wednesday, Aug. 21 it was announced that former Miami Marlins infielder Emmanuel Rivera was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. Rivera was designated for assignment by Miami a few days ago, and now has a new team.

Rivera, 28, will be joining his fourth major league club while in his fourth season in the big leagues. Other than the Marlins, he used to play for the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Throughout his 969 plate appearances, Rivera hit .239/.302/.354. Defensively, he played just under 2,000 innings at third base career-wide. While with the Marlins this season, he was hitting .214 with one home run and 15 RBIs in 96 games. Overall, he is a solid third baseman and he could be a reliable option to fill in the void at the hot corner with Jordan Westburg out with a hand injury.

The Orioles had opened a spot on their roster after they DFA'd Terrin Vavra. Before claiming Rivera, they had a decent amount of position players that ended up diminishing not too long ago.

The Orioles will likely attempt to use Rivera at third base given that Ramón Urías is likely going back to being a utility guy who would play multiple positions. They will also likely send down Liván Soto as soon as Rivera reports to the club.

Rivera is on pace to qualify for arbitration this winter. If he stays on the Baltimore roster through the rest of the season, they could offer him a contract.
