Texas QB Quinn Ewers Projected To End Major Drought At 2025 NFL Draft

When the Texas Longhorns were at the pinnacle of college football, they were contending for titles yearly and pumping out pros left and right.

The problem is, the last time that the program was at the pinnacle of the sport, most of the players that are on the roster right now were learning how to write in cursive or collecting Box Tops.

In 2023, the Longhorns made a triumphant return to the national stage, clinching the Big 12 title for the first time since 2009 and securing a spot in the College Football Playoff. Leading this resurgence was quarterback Quinn Ewers, who made significant strides in his development from his first year in Austin to his second. Now, he is back for a third year, ready to guide the Longhorns through a challenging SEC schedule and potentially lead them to their first title since Vince Young's iconic touchdown against USC in 2006.

He also has a chance to end the NFL draft drought, which has now lasted almost 20 years.

In a recent mock draft by ESPN's Field Yates, Ewers was projected to go in the first round to the Las Vegas Raiders, who are projected to have the No. 8 pick. If he does go in the first, he'd be the first Texas signal-caller to do so since Young was taken with the No. 3 overall pick in 2006.

The expectation around the country is that Texas will be one of the teams in the mix for both the SEC and the national title. If they reach that level of success, it likely means that Ewers played a major role in their journey. Something that Yates believes can lead to him going early in next year's draft.

"Ewers is a fun study with his smooth delivery and capacity to change arm angles to make creative throws. He has to be more consistent throwing downfield, but he can really carve up a defense with his intermediate accuracy. Ewers' functional mobility is also very good and allows him to work around the pocket effectively," Wrote Yates.

Ewers and the Longhorns open their season on Saturday, August 31, against Colorado State. All eyes will be on him to see if he can continue to improve and, more importantly, prove that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
