Michael King is having a solid season as a pitcher for the San Diego Padres , but it seems his wife is more focused on his rookie teammate, Jackson Merrill. King, who ranks fifth in the National League for strikeouts and sixth in ERA, has been receiving a flurry of texts from his wife, Sheila, about Merrill's impressive performances on the field.

“It’s more for her to tell me that, like, she’s locked into the game,” King said to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee . “But it’s cool. And it’s usually about me, especially when I’m pitching. And then it’ll be, like, whoever did well that day. She’ll be like, ‘Oh, Manny!’ The last freaking three weeks, it’s just Jackson.”

Merrill has emerged as a standout player this season, leading all rookies in hits and RBIs while also ranking second in home runs. His consistent play has been crucial for the Padres as they aim for a strong finish in the National League West. After being invited to spring training for the second year in a row, Merrill's contract was selected just days before the season began, and he has made the most of the opportunity.

In a recent game against the Minnesota Twins, Merrill continued to shine, hitting a three-run double that helped secure a 5-3 victory for the Padres. His ability to deliver in clutch situations is evident, as he has recorded multiple game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the ninth inning or later this season.

Merrill's achievements have not gone unnoticed. He was named the National League Rookie of the Month in June, becoming the first Padres rookie to earn this honor since 2020. Additionally, he is a strong candidate for the NL Rookie of the Year, competing against Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes for the title.
