Kyle Shanahan Names 'Capable' Fill-In for WR Brandon Aiyuk

With a new deal for Brandon Aiyuk still not in place, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is now tinkering with his game plan to fill the void that might be left by the star wide receiver.

While there have been reports that Aiyuk and the 49ers are slowly seeing eye to eye regarding the contract extension, Shanahan knows he has to prepare for every feasible scenario.

One player that Shanahan said he's looking at to possibly replace Aiyuk is fourth-year wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

He is expected to play a pivotal role for the 49ers in the upcoming season after signing a two-year contract extension worth $15.4 million in May 2024.

"We have Jauan, who's done a lot of good stuff for us here over the years," Shanahan said on KNBR's "The Shanahan Show" podcast. "When guys are healthy, he's always majored as our slot receiver.

"But we've used him outside, too. He's always been capable of being outside."

The deal extension reflected the 49ers' confidence in Jennings' contributions even though he has not put up eye-popping numbers yet. Last season, he recorded 19 receptions for 265 yards and one touchdown.

The 27-year-old former Tennessee standout also made significant plays in last season's Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs. He scored a touchdown and also threw a 21-yard touchdown pass.

"He's probably the first we would look to because he has been our No. 3 receiver since we've been here," Shanahan added. "At times, in some big moments, we've used him like a No. 1 guy."

As they gear up for another deep run, Jennings' role could expand significantly, particularly if Aiyuk’s situation remains unresolved.

The 49ers will open their campaign against on the New York Jets on Sept. 9.
