Dak Prescott Contract Decision: What Would You Choose?

DALLAS – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott doesn’t have a contract beyond this season. That subject has been met with plenty of ire from fans all offseason.

Plenty of fans and pundits alike believe that Dak is in for a huge financial windfall if he plays out this season and becomes a free agent next March. NFL Insider Mike Sando of the Athletic is among the many who are of the opinion that Prescott is “the one in control.”

"My opinion is that Prescott would prefer to remain with the Cowboys," Sando shared. "I don’t know how much he cares about maximizing his earning potential on this next contract, but with nearly $200 million in career earnings through this season, he’s facing zero financial pressure to take a deal.

“The Cowboys cannot use the franchise tag on him or trade him, so if he wants to maximize his leverage, he’s in prime position to do so. He’s the one in control of the situation."

Sando isn't breaking any new ground here; Cowboys Nation knows every inch of every detail of this situation.

Our Mike Fisher, on the other hand, is moving the ball in the following way ...

Fish asks: "If Dak Prescott is your son, and he asks your advice: 'Dad, I can get $56 million per year right now from the Cowboys (let's say), but my agent Todd France says if I go into free agency next March, I can get $70 million per year. ... Which should I choose?'

    "What do you tell him?''

If you think about it this way, there are no right or wrong answers.

Maybe "loyalty'' and "brotherhood'' matter. And maybe "one in the hand'' matters, too. Oh, and what about the almost countless millions Dak has and will make by being affiliated with "America's Team''?

Or ... maybe Dak should do what many of us do. Another employer offers us a raise to move, we take it. And in his case, he's risking his neck at his job, plenty of justification for going for "the bag.''

Oh, and if he doesn't sign now ... he can always in theory opt to re-up with the Cowboys once March free agency comes, right?

With Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love being the most recent quarterback to sign a massive deal at $55 million APY, Prescott’s number could be the first to eclipse $60 million. Fish has a source saying that with "patience'' (meaning next spring) that number really might be $70 million APY.

The Cowboys seem in no hurry to get it done, and neither does Prescott. The season kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 8 when the Cowboys travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns.

What should Dallas do here? What should Dak do here? What would you, if you were advising your son, do here?
