Aaron Rodgers Out in Preseason Finale; Giants' Starters Playing?

While Brian Daboll is being tight-lipped about his plans for starting players in Saturday night's preseason finale against the New York Jets, the New York Giants at least know who they won't be seeing:

The Jets announced Thursday that neither Rodgers nor backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be in uniform when the teams play their final preseason games at MetLife Field. Daboll, meanwhile, wouldn't commit Thursday when asked about the playing time of Giants starters such as quarterback Daniel Jones, rookie receiver Malik Nabers and defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux.

The Giants and Jets held joint practices this week, and in the past Daboll has not played his starters in the following game. That was the case last preseason when - after joint practices - when the starters played only a single series against the Carolina Panthers.

Jones was underwhelming - throwing an interception on his first pass attempt - last week in playing the first half against the Houston Texans.

The next time we'll see Rodgers taking a snap in a Jets ' game will be Sept. 9 in the regular-season opener at the San Francisco 49ers .

Earlier this week, Rodgers said he "didn't really have a preference" about playing in a preseason game, but now the decision has been made for him. He suffered a torn Achilles on the fourth snap of last year's opener - Sept. 11 against the Buffalo Bills - meaning it will be almost a full calendar calendar year between playing time for Rodgers.

“I feel good about where I’m at with my body and what I’ve kind of put together,” the 40-year-old, four-time MVP said this week. "I'm in a good place."

Rodgers was a full participant in training camp at Florham Park and showed no signs of his injury. Saleh reasoned that the extended work the starters got in three joint training camp practices with the Washington Commanders , Carolina Panthers and Giants was more valuable than any preseason game.

Rookie Adrian Martinez, last season’s UFL MVP, will get the start against the Giants and fellow rookie Andrew Peasley will play the second half. Rodgers and backup Tyrod Taylor will sit out.

The teams last year in the regular season, with the Jets winning 13-10 in overtime in Week 8.

One thing Daboll did confirm is that he will be calling the offensive plays Saturday, paving the way for him to also do it once the season begins.
