The Cincinnati Reds are in the fight of their lives to get back to the postseason. Entering play on Wednesday, the Reds are 5.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot.

In the hours leading up to the first game of four against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Reds announced a handful of moves:

To start, welcome to Cincinnati, Dominic Smith ! Smith was recently released by the Boston Red Sox after serving as their first baseman for the majority of the season. Prior to this year, he was a first-round pick of the New York Mets back in 2013 and was a member of their Major League roster from 2017 through 2022. He played one year with the Washington Nationals in 2023.

In his career, he's hit .247/.314/.405 with 64 home runs and 259 RBI. His 2020 season was his best where he put up a 162 OPS+ as the full-time first baseman for the Mets.

Heading to the IL is Jake Fraley (retro to August 21). In 92 games this year, Fraley has hit .271/.323/.366. He's taken a few steps back in just the three short seasons he's been in Cincinnati. In 2022, he had a 121 OPS+. In 2023, it was 108. This year, 91.

He has lost most of his power as well. Last year, he had 33 extra-base hits (18 doubles, 15 home runs). This year, that number is down to 18 (13 doubles, two triples, three home runs).

Brent Suter has been on the IL for a month and is set to begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A Louisville. The lefty suffered a partial shoulder tear and has been shut down for a few weeks. During the year, Suter made 38 appearances (three starts as an opener) and had a 3.68 ERA over 51 1/3 innings.

Finally, Brooks Kriske was Designated for Assignment. The right-handed pitcher was a sixth-round pick for the New York Yankees in 2016. He made his debut in 2020, was waived and picked up by the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, cut and signed by the Kansas City Royals in 2023, cut and finally signed by the Reds in December of last year.

He has yet to appear in Cincinnati and spent all season in Triple-A Louisville.
