Bills Rookie: 'Exciting' But Too 'Up & Down' in Preseason?

    By Adam Schultz,

Roster cuts will be coming thick and fast for the Buffalo Bills after their final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

One such player who has a chance to consolidate his roster spot is running back Ray Davis . After laying a solid foundation in training camp and then putting an exclamation mark on his work in the Bills' two preseason games, Davis is in good shape heading into the Panthers game.

But being a rookie, the first NFL preseason can be an eye-opener and some struggle. For Davis, it's been exciting, but he also acknowledged that it hasn't always been smooth sailing.

“It's definitely been exciting," Davis said on Tidbits Timeouts . "Up and down at times, but that's just what it is, and it's a lot different from college. A lot of people always ask me what's the difference and understand the meetings, understand you want to be perfect on the field a lot and just trying to get through the motions of trying to be around the vets and understand the routine. I think that's something I've really been trying to do is build that routine, find myself as an individual, as a player, as a person and just going in there and having fun.”

With James Cook leading the running back room, how the depth chart shakes up behind him remains a mystery, but Davis is making a solid case that it should be him that backs up the Pro Bowler in 2024.

Davis is coming off a good performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He totaled 58 yards from eight carries, including six straight runs in the second half for 49 yards.

With one more game to go, Davis has the opportunity to put it beyond all doubt that he deserves a spot on Buffalo's final roster.

    Will he take his chance?
