Report Indicates Massive Big 12 Expansion Move Could Be On The Way

For the past year or so, there have been plenty of conference realignment talks, but there is one conference that has been extremely aggressive compared to the rest.

This, of course, is the Big 12. The conference went from losing its two biggest brands in Texas and Oklahoma and having other schools looking for an out, to adding eight programs and staying alive. Four of the programs that they poached were from another Power 5 conference as they were able to land four Pac-12 schools in a move that effectively signaled the beginning of the end for the conference.

While some reports have linked them to Florida State and Clemson, those have been put on ice. However, a report on Friday by Andrew Marchand and Justin Williams of the Athletic revealed that Big 12 officials will be meeting next week for an "in-depth discussion" regarding them possibly adding basketball power UConn.

This isn't the first time that the Big 12 has looked into adding UConn, whose basketball program has won the last two titles. Back in August, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark put the talks on ice, but the conference had been in contact with them well before they added the four corner schools of the Pac-12.

In order to get into the Big 12, UConn would need at least 12 of the 16 members to vote them in.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo also revealed that UConn would be joining in all sports, just not all at once.

"In the latest version of the deal, UConn would join the conference as a member in all sports except football starting, at latest, in 2026," Dellenger wrote .

"Contingent upon the school meeting certain investment thresholds in the sport, UConn football would join the Big 12 in 2031."

The Big 12 is already the deepest basketball conference in the country, and adding UConn would only strengthen its case.
