The New York Mets Look for a Statement Series Win Today

The Mets have Jose Quintana on the mound. Quintana has been a real problem recently. The 35 year old has a 6.27 ERA in his last seven starts. He has an 8.27 ERA in 20.2 innings in his four August starts. The Mets have lost all four of those outings.

The veteran has not been good enough. A team in a stretch run cannot withstand having a pitcher who consistently does not put them in a position to win. The Mets pitching staff is thin so Quintana has continued to start every five days. The Mets claim to have confidence in him, but it is unclear what they are thinking behind the scenes.

Quintana’s job may not be as safe as the Mets claim it is. Regardless, the Mets need a good start out of him. A good start could get Quintana’s confidence back and help the Mets feel they can send the lefty out there every week.

Here is how the Padres lineup against the struggling Quintana:

    1.) LF Jurickson Profar

    2.) 3B Donovan Solano

    3.) 2B Xander Bogaerts

    4.) DH Manny Machado

    5.) 1B Jake Cronenworth

    6.) CF Jackson Merrill

    7.) C Luis Campusano

    8.) RF Bryce Johnson

    9.) SS Mason Mccoy

    SP Martin Pérez

The Padres are starting their own journeyman lefty. Martin Pérez is on the mound for San Diego today. The Padres traded for Pérez at the deadline. The left hander has not had a great year as a whole, but he has been great since coming to San Diego.

Perez has a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings since joining the Padres.

Here is how New York lineup against the southpaw:

    1.) SS Francisco Lindor

    2.) 3B Mark Vientos

    3.)1B Pete Alonso

    4.) LF Brandon Nimmo

    5.) RF Starling Marte

    6.) DH J.D. Martinez

    7.) 2B Jose Iglesias

    8.) C Luis Torrens

    9.) CF Harrison Bader

    SP Jose Quintana

Pete Alonso moves up to the three hole while J.D., who is in a slump, moves down to the six spot.

New York has already taken the season series against the Padres but they can make a real statement by securing a commanding series victory today.
