Ahead of the 4 p.m. ET 53-man roster cut deadline on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers made an interesting move by releasing a former SEC All-American.

The NFL regular season is just over a week away, and teams are gearing up to begin their quest toward Super Bowl LIX, which will be hosted in New Orleans. Before teams start to prep for their first opponent, they must cut their roster by nearly half.

During the preseason, teams can carry up to 90 players, giving them the opportunity to find hidden gems and see who might make a difference. Starters usually only play a few drives across the three preseason games, while most of the action is focused on evaluating the rest of the squad.

On Tuesday morning, the Packers cut kicker Anders Carlson after only one season. Carlson was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Auburn.

Aside from the Packers' big move, some other notable cuts ahead of the deadline include:

    • Bills release safety Kareem Jackson
    • Jaguars release safety Terrell Edmunds
    • Buccaneers release wide receiver Sterling Shepard
    • Giants release wide receiver Allen Robinson

The end of Carlson's rookie season was one to forget. He struggled mightily in crucial situations, including a pivotal missed 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the Packers' Divisional Round playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers. Green Bay would go on to lose 24-21.

He ended the year by converting 27-of-33 field goals and 34-of-39 extra points.

While the Packers have not announced their starting kicker for 2024 yet, Greg Joseph is a name to watch. The team brought the former Viking in toward the end of last season and he competed with Carlson throughout this year's training camp.

During his college years in the SEC, Carlson was phenomenal, becoming one of the best kickers in the country. For the Tigers, he made 79-of-110 field goals and 173-of-176 extra points across five seasons. He was also honored as a second-team All-American in 2020.

His 410 career points place him sixth all-time on the SEC's highest scorer list.
