Commanders’ Preseason Struggles: Two Players Who Fell Behind

    By Austin Givan,

The NFL preseason may not hold the same significance it once did, but for the Washington Commanders , it has been a critical period of evaluation and team-building. With over two-thirds of the roster turned over under the new regime, the preseason provided a vital opportunity to develop chemistry and assess depth across the board. However, while some players seized the moment to solidify their roles, others fell behind, raising questions about their future with the team.

One of the most concerning developments from Washington’s preseason was the performance of offensive lineman Ricky Stromberg . The Commanders’ starting offensive line appears set, but depth remains a significant concern, particularly on the interior. Stromberg, a former third-round pick, was expected to step up and provide reliable backup support. Unfortunately, his preseason outings were underwhelming, leaving much to be desired in terms of meeting the elevated standards of the new coaching staff. While his versatility offers some hope, Stromberg’s position on the 53-man roster is far from secure, as the Commanders may seek reinforcements through the waiver wire.

Another notable disappointment was former wide receiver Jahan Dotson , who found himself traded to the Philadelphia Eagles after failing to fit into the Commanders' new system. Dotson once hailed as the ideal complement to Terry McLaurin , struggled to adapt to the changes brought in by the new regime. Despite showing flashes of potential, he was ultimately overshadowed by other receivers like Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, and Olamide Zaccheaus . Dotson’s departure to a division rival underscores the ruthless approach taken by general manager Adam Peters as he reshapes the roster to better align with the team’s vision.

As the Commanders prepare to finalize their roster ahead of the regular season, the performances of Stromberg and Dotson serve as a reminder that the NFL is a league of constant evaluation. While some players rise to the occasion, others falter, and the repercussions can be swift and decisive.
