    Jets Trade Codrington to Bills

Last year, the New York Jets stunned the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 when rookie returner Xavier Gipson took a punt to the house for a game-winning touchdown.

Ahead of the 2024 season, the two teams are once again intertwined through special teams.

On Tuesday, the Jets traded defensive back/returner Brandon Codrington to the Bills, per Ian Rapoport .

The teams will swap Day 3 selections in 2026 as part of the deal.

It’s a rare intra-division trade for two teams fighting for supremacy in the AFC East, but not a particularly meaningful one. Codrington was a long shot to make New York’s roster, and as Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline to get down to 53 players approached, the front office was able to squeeze a little value out of a player who wasn’t in their plans.

Codrington isn’t a lock to make Buffalo’s roster, either. But this gives the Bills the opportunity to get a look at a potential special teams weapon before any other teams, given that he would have been subject to the waiver wire without a deal.

While he didn’t score a touchdown as a returner this summer, Codrington did perform well. One of his two kick returns went for 63 yards , and he ripped off a 31-yard punt return in that same contest (Week 2 vs. the Carolina Panthers).

Should he make the roster, Codrington will have a chance to get revenge on the Jets in Weeks 6 and 17.
