In the first round of this year’s draft, New York drafted Carson Benge from Oklahoma State U. The Mets were reportedly thrilled that they were able to land Benge with the #19 pick.

Looking at Benge’s college career, it is easy to understand the Mets’ excitement. Benge excelled at Oklahoma State. The outfielder had an OPS over 1.000 in both of his collegiate years. He, importantly, added 11 home runs in his junior season. His HR total jumped from seven to eighteen.

Benge has begun his Met career positively. He has a 1.107 OPS in eight games in Single A. The former Cowboy has reached base at least twice in his last three games. In those games, Benge has shown a lot of the tools that drew the Mets to him.

Benge walked twice in one game. In all, he has walked eight times while only striking out nine times. Benge has a 3:1 BB:K ratio in his last three games. It is clear he is finding his footing in professional baseball. Walks are a huge part of his game. Benge had 91 walks in his two years at Oklahoma State

Benge is a very patient hitter. He does not chase pitches out of the zone.

Benge has a great tendency to use the whole field. He is very comfortable going the other way and has easy power hitting to the opposite field. Benge has showcased his power in the last two games. Benge hit his first home run with the Mets organization yesterday and followed it up with one today. Both home runs went to the opposite field. The lefty has a great relaxed approach and he can drive a ball to left field.

Benge is listed at 6’1” and only 184 pounds. Benge is relatively thin and has room to grow into his frame. He has the ability and potential to become a real power threat.

Today was Benge’s best game with the Mets organization so far. He went 3-4 with a HR, a double, three RBI and a walk.

Benge is a very exciting hitting prospect. He is already fifth on MLB’s ranking of Mets prospects. He already has excellent bat to ball skills. Benge could become a very dangerous player if he is able to add power and keep his contact and walk ability.
