Bills Explain Final Roster Spot Awarded to Casey Toohill

Casey Toohill has been in the NFL for the last four seasons, has never recorded over five sacks in a single year, and is on his third team in that span.

So why exactly did the Buffalo Bills keep him on the active roster after an injury-riddled training camp?

Toohill being in his first year with Buffalo and as a free agent signing played a role in that, but for the Bills to keep him as a sixth edge rusher of sorts on the team left many confused overall.

It was something general manager Brandon Beane looked to address Thursday.

“Casey’s had a good career so far, even before he got here,” Beane said. “Another tough decision there as far as how many you keep at each spot. I would say there are more decisions like that than not at different positions that you’re deciding. You’re doing special teams, you’re doing guys that can go inside and go out. You’re just trying to make sure you’ve got enough answers when your starters do down, guys that can play different spots. Just all the nuances of the game. Not an easy call, though.”

Toohill's special teams prowess and work as an improved edge rusher made him an intriguing signing for Buffalo during the offseason.

If he's unable to produce at all on defense or special teams, though, this could be another move criticized by Beane in a make-or-break season for the franchise.
