Giants Sign Pair of Ex-Broncos to Practice Squad

The stretch of the calendar between the final whistle of the preseason and the opening kickoff of the regular season is one of the sport's most chaotic. From hundreds of players getting cut to the frenzy to add fringe contributors to the practice squad, the transaction log can get jammed in a hurry.

The New York Giants are no different. From cutting, signing , and promoting fullback Jakob Johnson in a 72-hour span to signing free agents to the active roster, general manager Joe Schoen has been busy.

Among his transactions were adding two former Denver Broncos to the practice squad .

On Wednesday, the team signed defensive lineman Elijah Garcia to its practice squad (per Mike Klis ). Entering the third year of his career, the former undrafted free agent has seen sparing playing time over two seasons, making a minor impact as a pass rusher.

He joins Casey Rogers as the second defensive tackle on New York’s practice squad.

Their second signing by way of Denver, cornerback Art Green (per Chris Tomasson ), is the more enticing signing. The second-year pro, who also went undrafted, Green fared well this preseason. He’s a strong, consistent tackler who has some upside in coverage, too.

That potential is derived from elite athleticism. At 6-foot-1, 198 points, Green’s 4.36-second 40-yard dash stands out, and he has the burst to match.

His change of direction skills lagged behind, but harnessing his straight-line speed could prove fruitful as depth in the secondary or on special teams.

Given New York’s rather dire situation at corner, taking a shot on a strong athlete is an unsurprising bet for the bottom of the practice squad.
