St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher Kyle Gibson Creates History In Saturday’s Game At Yankee Stadium

Kyle Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals did something that hadn’t been accomplished in 60 years on Saturday.

The Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 6-5 in the Bronx in Game 2 of their three-game series. Gibson picked up the win after allowing one run in seven solid innings of work. He became the first Cardinals pitcher since Bob Gibson in Game 5 of the 1964 World Series to record a win at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees had won the first game of the series 6-3 on Friday.

The Yankees and Cardinals have only played 20 regular season games against each other, despite both franchises being among some of the oldest in the sport. This is the third regular-season series played between the two teams at Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers swept the Cardinals at home in both 2003 and 2017.

The two teams played each other in each of the last two seasons at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals won two of three games in both 2022 and 2023.

The Yankees and Cardinals have yet to play each other in the postseason since the 1964 World Series. The Cardinals won the championship in seven games. They won Games 4 and 5 at Yankee Stadium during that series. Bob Gibson allowed two unearned runs in 10 innings pitched the last time that the Cardinals won in New York.

The teams have met in the World Series five times. The Yankees won the 1928 and 1943 titles while the Cardinals took the championship in 1926, 1942, and 1964.

The Yankees and Cardinals finish their 2024 regular season series on Sunday afternoon.
