Jim Harbaugh has made it clear: the Los Angeles Chargers' backup quarterbacks should not try to imitate Justin Herbert.

During a recent press conference, Harbaugh emphasized the need for individualized coaching for the quarterbacks behind Herbert. He pointed out that each player has unique strengths and should focus on their own game rather than trying to replicate what Herbert does on the field.

"The backup quarterbacks here with the Chargers behind Justin, it just hit me now … I've been watching this for months now, but we have got to coach them separately from Justin," Harbaugh said in his opening statements in Thursday's press conference.

This shift in approach comes after Easton Stick struggled during the preseason, failing to find the end zone and committing turnovers. Harbaugh acknowledged that treating Stick the same way as Herbert was not beneficial for his development.

The Chargers are now implementing tailored game plans for each quarterback, which could be crucial as Stick competes with newly acquired Taylor Heinicke for the backup position. Harbaugh recognizes that Herbert is a standout talent, and coaching the backups in the same manner would not serve them well.

“They can’t try to replicate Justin and what he does, from every way: the footwork he takes, the reads that makes, the throws that he attempts, he’s unreplicable,” Harbaugh said via the team's transcript . “Anybody that’s in that same quarterback room with him, you’ve got to get out of your mind what he can and does do and concentrate on doing your game.”

Herbert's exceptional skills, including his size and ability to make difficult throws under pressure, set him apart. Harbaugh's decision to differentiate coaching styles reflects an understanding that each quarterback needs to carve out their own identity in the game.
