Former Alabama Star Makes NFL History With New Contract

Following a terrific start to his young professional career, Denver Broncos cornerback and former Alabama Crimson Tide star Patrick Surtain II has just reset the CB market with an extension.

Contract figures are exploding across the NFL lately, with the top free-agent quarterbacks, wide receivers, offensive tackles and EDGE rushers all netting historic cash for their respective positions. The extension boom has now reached the cornerback position, where Surtain just inked a nearly-$100-million deal.

ESPN's Adam Schefter had the news Wednesday morning, reporting the massive new contract for Surtain, which he notes is now the largest in NFL history for a defensive back.

"ESPN Sources: Denver Broncos and two-time Pro-Bowl CB Patrick Surtain ll reached agreement today on a four-year, $96 million extension that includes $77.5 million guaranteed, now making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history," wrote Schefter. "Tory Dandy of CAA negotiated the deal."

If a team is going to pay a defensive back close to $100 million, then Surtain is a good choice, considering he is just 24 years old and already has a pair of Pro Bowl appearances under his belt. Not only that, but Surtain was a First-Team All-Pro in 2022, the highest possible honor for a player in their respective position.

So far, Surtain has played just three seasons before inking his big extension. In those years, he's racked up 187 tackles, 150 solo, along with seven interceptions, 36 pass deflections and one forced fumble. He also hasn't missed a single game since his rookie season, when he missed just two.

Patrick Surtain is an elite and reliable corner, which is why he's also now very, very rich.
