The San Diego Padres have lost outfielder José Azocar to the New York Mets, who claimed him off waivers. The news comes after the Padres designated Azocar for assignment earlier this week when they reinstated Fernando Tatis Jr. to their 40-man roster.

Following the waiver claim, the Mets have optioned Azocar to their Triple-A affiliate, Syracuse. In a corresponding move, they transferred right-handed pitcher Sean Reid-Foley to the 60-day injured list.

Azocar, who has a career OPS+ of 74, is recognized for his defensive skills and speed, ranking in the 91st percentile in sprint speed. He has been a part of the Padres since signing a minor league contract in 2020 and made his major league debut on April 7, 2022. Over the past two seasons, he has consistently appeared in at least 50 games each year.

With Tatis Jr. returning from injury, the Padres had to make room in the outfield. Azocar was the most utilized right fielder for the team, starting 81 games. However, he hasn’t played since June 22, as he was sent back to Triple-A El Paso to clear a roster spot for another player.

Now with the Mets, Azocar joins a crowded outfield that includes Harrison Bader, Starling Marte, and Brandon Nimmo. The Mets currently sit second in the National League East and are vying for a playoff spot, which could provide Azocar with an opportunity to return to the majors if needed.

This season marks Azocar's final option year, meaning he will no longer have the flexibility to move between the majors and minors as he has in the past.
