Texas has supplanted conference foe Georgia as the new No. 1 rated team in the ESPN FPI rankings following its dominant 31-12 victory on the road over Michigan, the defending national champions.

"Each team’s FPI rating is composed of a predicted offensive, defensive and special teams component. These ratings represent the number of points each unit is expected to contribute to the team's net scoring margin on a neutral field against an average FBS opponent," according to ESPN .

It is important to note that this is not a computer ranking, such as the BCS, which is based more on resumes. The FPI is focused on ranking teams based on who the model would expect to win on a neutral field.

“The ultimate goal of FPI is not to rank teams 1 through 128,” the ESPN website states. “Rather, it is to correctly predict games and season outcomes. If Vegas ever published the power rankings it uses to set its lines, they would likely look quite a lot like FPI.”

As teams such as Georgia and Ohio State, who are No. 2 and No. 4 in the FPI rankings, begin their conference schedules, they may be able to supplant the Longhorns who are not expected to be significantly tested until the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 12.

Despite ESPN’s claim that the FPI closely mirrors Vegas’ odds, Georgia is a 1.5- to 3-point favorite over Texas for the clash between the two national championship contenders on Oct. 19 in Austin.

The Longhorns (2-0) now turn to an I-35 tilt with UTSA (1-1) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
