After former Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray's trade to the New Orleans Pelicans, could Trae Young be next?

Fans seem to think so, and they have the perfect home lined up for the three-time All-Star: the San Antonio Spurs.

They have a pretty sound argument.

As ESPN's Andrew Lopez pointed out in the wake of the trade, the Spurs control Atlanta's next three drafts, including unprotected firsts in 2025 and 2027 and the ability to swap picks in 2026.

Atlanta's underwhelming return for Murray—Larry Nance Jr., Dyson Daniels, and two future firsts—suggests the franchise could enter a rebuild, which will be hard to do without its own first-round pick until 2028.

Trading Young to the Spurs for its picks back might be its best path forward, no matter how depressing that might be to Hawks fans.

"So Trae Young is a spur," deduced one commenter.

"Now Trae prolly going to the Spurs for a 2003 Silverado. Watch," deadpanned another.

"The only move the Hawks have left is to trade Trae Young to the Spurs for their assets back," wrote the Spurs Reddit X account.

"The Hawks just lost a lot of leverage for a Trae Young trade, even moreso with the Spurs specifically... Real chance they wouldn’t have to give all the ATL picks back. Spurs have them cornered," warned one more.

Another commenter discussed a potential trade's impact on the loaded Western Conference.

"Hawks are totally gonna trade Trae Young to the Spurs can the West stop adding more talent," they wrote.

Young was the No. 5 overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft. In 2023-24, he averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists per game.
