Illinois quick hits: State unemployment rate hits 5%; Decatur Public Schools adopt new phone policy for students
The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced that unemployment increased to 5 percent. The May revised unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. The national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in June, up slightly from the previous month. The number of unemployed workers in the state was 327,900, up over 3 percent from the prior month, and up nearly 19 percent over the same month one year ago.

University of Illinois Springfield announces dean’s list
The University of Illinois Springfield has released the names of the 698 students who made the dean’s list for spring semester 2024. A total of 104 students in the College of Business and Management; 320 students in the College of Health, Science and Technology; 109 students in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; 143 students in the College of Public Affairs and Education; and 22 non-degree seeking or undecided students made the list.
Area football schedules for 2024 season
The Illinois High School Association released all football schedules for the 2024 season. The season opener for all area teams (Arcola, Tuscola, Villa Grove and Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond) is August 30 and the regular season finale is set for October 25. The first day of football practice is Aug. 12 with the playoffs pairings to be announced October 26 and they start Nov. 1 or 2 with the second round set for Nov. 8 or 9 and the quarterfinals Nov. 15 or 16 followed by the semifinals Nov. 22 or 23 and the Class 1A state championship is Nov. 29.
