North Mac’s Jersey West wins championship at Drysdale
On July 11, incoming North Mac High School junior Jersey West won a championship at the Drysdale Golf Tournament in Springfield for the second year in a row. After claiming the title of the 14-15 age division in 2023, West dethroned defending champion and Rochester graduate Kiley Torres 3-up-2 on the final day in the 16-18 competition. West is a member of the NMHS girls’ golf team. Her teammate Taylor Keirs also competed at Drysdale but lost to Torres 2-up-1 in the 16-18 semifinal round. We’re starting to get into the powerhouse states for amateur motocross in America in the Scott Sports Countdown to the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Each day we’re tracking the titles that each state (and some countries and U.S. territories) has won at the ranch since 1982, the first year of the big race being held in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Area football schedules for 2024 season
The Illinois High School Association released all football schedules for the 2024 season. The season opener for all area teams (Arcola, Tuscola, Villa Grove and Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond) is August 30 and the regular season finale is set for October 25. The first day of football practice is Aug. 12 with the playoffs pairings to be announced October 26 and they start Nov. 1 or 2 with the second round set for Nov. 8 or 9 and the quarterfinals Nov. 15 or 16 followed by the semifinals Nov. 22 or 23 and the Class 1A state championship is Nov. 29.
UIS Men’s Basketball Receives NABC Team Academic Excellence Award
The University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award. The Prairie Stars earned the award for the fourth time in five years. The NABC Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes men's basketball programs that completed the 2023-24 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Four Prairie Stars were also named to NABC Honors Court. Isaiah Esker, Yamani Shareef, Max Kunnert, and Jason Bergstrom were recognized as junior, senior, or graduate men's basketball student-athletes with GPAs of 3.20 or higher during the 2023-24 school year.
