DENVER ( KDVR ) — One day before the Fourth of July holiday, the Aurora Reservoir has closed its swim area due to elevated bacteria levels.

Aurora Parks, Recreation and Open Space posted on Facebook about the closure. The department said that levels of bacteria can fluctuate in natural bodies of water, and on Wednesday, the swim area was forced to close due to high levels. An electronic sign at the entrance blames it on E. coli.

While the department said the water can clear itself of the bacteria, it is not recommended for people to swim in it when levels are high.

With the Fourth of July just a day away, it is unclear if the swim area will reopen in time for the holiday. Aurora Parks, Recreation and Open Space said their team will receive updated tests on Thursday morning. If the levels have dropped, the swim area will open.

While the swim area remains closed, the kayaking, paddleboarding and boating section of the reservoir is still open.
