The city of Austin will begin construction on a half-mile pedestrian bridge over Lady Bird Lake in East Austin on Monday.

The bridge will connect Longhorn Shores, Canterbury Park and a peninsula near Holly Shores, meeting to form a 76-foot-wide plaza over the lake that will feature bike racks, benches and trees. The plaza will also connect to the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trial to create a wishbone-shape running parallel to Longhorn Dam.

    Construction timeline

Beginning on July 1, the public can expect to notice changes around the bridge’s construction area, according to a news released issued by the city's Capital Delivery Services department. Longhorn Shores will be closed to the public, as will the tunnel from Krieg Fields under Pleasant Valley Road.

While trail users can expect to see fencing installed around Krieg Fields, the complex will remain open to the public throughout the building process.

Starting July 8, traffic going east on Canterbury Street will be closed, and the public will lose access to Canterbury Park and its parking lot.

The peninsula near Holly Street will also be closed off to the public.

Starting July 15, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail will be detoured to the north along the east side of Pleasant Valley Road, continuing west on Canterbury Street and finish South on Pedernales and Holly streets.

The city said this detour is expected to last for 18 months; however, the exact construction timeline will depend on weather conditions.
