It’s hard to put into words the craziness that has transpired in the past week for the Texas Longhorns baseball program, but as all of the dust begins to settle, it is becoming evident they made the right decision.

On the day of Game 3 in the CWS final, rumors started trickling out that Texas A&M head coach Jim Scholssnagle was high on Chris Del Conte’s list of replacements for David Pierce on the Forty Acres. Not even 24 hours later the Longhorns had their man. To make matters even better, it was expected that a large part of his staff and roster would be following him to Austin.

As part of that move, it was anticipated that hitting coach Michael Earley would take over the same position at Texas which would have relieved former MLB veteran Troy Tulowitzki of his duties. However, in a shocking turn of events, the Aggies decided to keep Earley on the A&M payroll and hire him as the next head coach.

For Coach Schloss, it was a bummer not to bring a guy as talented as Earley, but it’s always awesome to see one of your guys get promoted.

Ultimately, Earley’s decision to take the job in College Station may be the best thing for everyone as the Longhorns will now be able to retain the five-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger. Tulowitzki has also spent time working with the USA Baseball team and knows the game as well as literally anybody on Earth.

After serving with the Longhorns from 2020-2022 Tulowitzki and Texas parted ways, but he rejoined the staff ahead of the 2024 season as the Director of Player Development.
