Even as Beryl pummeled Houston, Austin remained relatively dry

Even as Hurricane Beryl pummeled Houston and East Texas, greater Austin has gone unscathed.

Why it matters: Beryl left more than 2 million Texans without power as it plowed a path of destroyed homes and drowned vehicles.

    • Winds topped out at 92 mph as the Category 1 hurricane crashed ashore Monday morning and moved directly over Houston.

Threat level: The prospects of thunderstorms in Austin top out at 20% every day this week, per federal forecasters.

What they're saying: "Minimal impacts are expected across the Hill Country and the Austin/Interstate 35 corridor," Lower Colorado River Authority meteorologist Bob Rose posted on his weather blog .

Yes, but: The farther east of I-35 you live, the more likely you are to get drenched.

Context: Just a few days ago, as Beryl moved northwest over the Yucatán Peninsula, forecasters predicted landfall somewhere in South Texas or northern Mexico with a track headed for Central Texas. But, the clockwise circulation of air around a high pressure system helped the storm make an earlier turn to the north than initially expected.

What we're watching: Whether Austin serves as a shelter for people displaced from Beryl.

    • The Austin Humane Society has already evacuated nearly 100 animals from a shelter in the track forecast zone.

Flashback: In 2006, the Austin Convention Center served as an emergency shelter and resource spot for thousands of evacuees from Hurricane Katrina — and the Palmer Events Center was converted into a medical facility.
