    Children discover skeletal remains while playing inside abandoned home in Highlands

    TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A death investigation is underway after children made a frightening discovery while playing inside an abandoned home in Highlands County on Thursday.

    According to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office , the children were inside the home on Memorial Drive in Avon Park when they came across skeletal remains.

    After the discovery, the children told a nearby adult who then called deputies.

    The remains are believed to have been inside the home for well over a year and appears the person was using the home as a shelter, the sheriff’s office said.

    Detectives are working to identify the remains and the medical examiner will attempt to determine the cause of death.
