AYDEN — Ayden’s police chief introduced the department’s two newly certified school resource officers to the town board recently and updated the board on their performance.

Chief David Dempsey introduced officers Treyven Ott and Brian Hardy-Dixon to commissioners during the board meeting on March 11. Dempsey said Ott comes from Rocky Mount and that he’s currently assigned at the Ayden Middle School.

“I thought that he was going to get his retirement papers before they got him sworn in because it took forever for training standards, but he finally got sworn in,” said Dempsey. “He’s been on the job and working for the town since December, but he started in the school about two weeks ago when his paperwork came back, and he’s doing great.”

Dempsey said Dixon is the school resource officer at Ayden Elementary School. Dempsy said he first met Dixon on a ride-along 20 years ago when Dixon was a young student.

“At the time he was way down here, and now he’s fully grown, he’s a great guy, great officer, and he’s going to do great things at the elementary school,” said Dempsey. “He’s making a good relationship with the kids, eventually it’s going to pay off for the town, and both officers are great.”

The officers carry out duties with the town when school is out of session.

In other business the board approved a request to modify the town’s land-use plan for approximately 17 acres of the property at 4346 S. Edge Road, the location of New Deliverance Church.

The applicant, Bishop Glen William, requested the classification be changed from in-town neighborhood to low density residential. Assistant town manager Stephen Smith said there are no immediate plans for the property and that any future rezoning would still require board approval.

Randall Hart and Jenny Garris, who have properties near the Church Hart, spoke during a public hearing on the request. Hart said that he has heard talk of a potential funeral home as well as an adult daycare facility; Garris wanted to know exactly what the change would allow in the area.

Hart said that his family wants to be good neighbors and that they aren’t opposed to future developments, they just want transparency and to make sure that the kids in the neighborhood will be safe from future traffic.

    In other action:

Quinerly-Oslchner Library Director Rachelle Mondovich said reported the library participated in Read Across America on March 2, working with with 50 other libraries across the country. Tranette Green was appointed to the library board commissioners.

Cindy Goff was appointed as the delegate for the Greenville Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Advisory Committee; Commissioner Sarah Connor was appointed as the alternate.

Mayor Ivory Mewborn congratulated Town Manager Scott Howard on starting the Ayden Citizens Academy, a program to build and strengthen relationships, educate Ayden stakeholders and grow through their leaders. Classes began on Feb. 13 and will meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 6-8 p.m. in the police training room upstairs in the Town Hall.
