Police fatally shot a man Thursday night in Chandler after his family called officers to report the man being suicidal.

According to police, just before 9 p.m., officers responded to the area of North Hartford Street and West Elliot Road on a call from a family member of a 30-something-year-old man making suicidal statements and having fired a round in an alleyway outside their home. Officers at the scene were invited into the home by the caller, who said the man's weapon had been secured from him, according to police.

Officers entered the garage where the man and another family member were and they tried to talk with him. But seconds later, the suspect pulled out a gun from his waistband, and that is when the shooting happened, according to police. Life-saving measures were attempted on the man, but he was pronounced dead, police said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, police said.

The incident will be investigated by the Mesa Police Department, Chandler police said.
