Residents of Bakersfield share thoughts, expectations of presidential debate

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Four years after the presidential debate filled with arguing, insults and rude behavior in September 2020, history is made as a sitting President and former President square off in Georgia for the 2024 presidential debate.

Some people on the streets of Bakersfield had something to say.

“It is what it is. I mean, it’s about what you can expect from the two of them,” said Chase Brooks, the owner of a bookstore. “So, I think we can expect the same tonight honestly. It’s gonna be like a WWE match in words.”

“Real answers would be nice. Real, real answers,” said Christy Riguini, who was enjoying the day at Hart Park. “I don’t like all the insults and all that mess.”

Riguini and Henderson Octavio were at Hart Park on their bikes looking at the birds. They said they want Biden and Trump to address important issues during the 90 minute debate and not each other.

“The government does not need to be involved in our bodies,” said Riguini. “I think who we love is who we love and nobody’s business.”

Octavio said, “We need someone who’s going to make the better decisions for America. Whether they like him being a felon…whether Biden’s an old man.”

There are a lot of firsts in the 2024 presidential debate including: the first time both candidates face-off in 2024 and it’s the first time a mute button is part of the parameters.
